Madi B Educating LLC's LGBTQ+ student group curriculum empowers youth to develop a strong sense of belonging and well-being through affirming curricula, mentorship, and community-building to foster the self-expression and advancement of inclusivity in education. The program fosters belonging, self-awareness, and community engagement while highlighting important historical and cultural perspectives traditionally underrepresented in standard curricula. By amplifying underrepresented voices in educational settings, we work against the erasure of our community’s contributions to society and culture by offering insight into the history often unheard in school settings.
The curriculum evolved from recognizing the expanded potential of student affinity and support groups. Madi, an elementary school counselor and GSA advisor, began to recognize that GSAs had the opportunity to provide an even stronger impact on students beyond serving as a space for connection and safety. After many years as a SEL curriculum writer for her school, and her experience supporting the development of her district’s tier-one SEL curriculum, Madi used her lesson writing skills to create a LGBTQ2SIA+ affirming curriculum for GSA student groups. The curriculum has a strong emphasis on social justice, intersectionality, diverse representation, visible allyship, and the celebration of a culture currently facing erasure both within schools and beyond. Students have the opportunity to develop essential social-emotional skills while gaining valuable historical and cultural perspectives often underrepresented in standard educational materials.
